What does a spontaneous walk over to ZooLights cost this year? For anyone who lives a few blocks from Cannon Drive, the answer is $20 a person. Someone who booked the same night a week earlier could have paid as little as $7. Someone who set a reminder for a Monday morning at 11 a.m. could have paid nothing.
Lincoln Park Zoo is free 365 days a year, and ZooLights ticket sales help keep it that way. The holiday lights run on a separate ticket system, and that system charges for indecision. ZooLights opens to the public Friday, November 20, and runs through January 3, 2027, from 4:30 to 9 p.m. with last entry at 8 p.m. The light tunnel, the narrated South Lawn show, the Ferris wheel and the fire pits are all back. What matters more for a neighbor is the calendar logic behind them, and much of the rest of Lincoln Park's December follows the same logic.
Three Prices for the Same Night
The zoo's ZooLights event page lays out the 2026 ticket types plainly:
| Ticket | Price | When you commit | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed Date, bought ahead | $7 to $12, depending on the date | Before the day of your visit | No date changes after purchase |
| Fixed Date, bought day-of | $20 | The day of your visit | Gate supply is limited |
| Flexible Admission | $20 | Any eligible night through Jan. 3 | Excludes ticketed special events |
| Free Admission Monday | $0 | One week ahead, 11 a.m. CT | Reservation required for every guest |
The top price and the bottom price are for the same lights on the same paths. The only difference is how early you decided to go. All tickets are nonrefundable, and Fixed Date tickets can't be moved to another night. You can forward them to a friend or family member if your plans change, but resale is prohibited.
When WGN covered the 2025 season, fixed-date tickets were also $7 to $12, Mondays were free with registration, and the $20 Flexible Admission ticket was introduced that year. In its second season, Flexible Admission plays a specific role. It costs the same as walking up, but it protects you against two things the zoo names directly, sellouts and bad weather. ZooLights runs rain, snow or shine. So the $20 Flexible ticket makes sense for a household that knows it will go but doesn't know which night the weather will allow. Paying $20 at the gate buys none of that protection, only a ticket if any are left.
Gate sales are real but thin. The zoo says a limited number of tickets may be available at the gates, at $20 each when available, and cash is accepted only at the East and West Gates. Every person in your group needs a ticket, children included.
Members sit outside this math. Depending on membership level, Lincoln Park Zoo members receive two to eight free Fixed Date tickets. They also get Member Preview Night on Thursday, November 19, with free train and carousel rides, 20% off at the Gift Shop, and free hot chocolate at the Member Center.
Free Mondays Run on a Weekly Clock
The four free nights are where advance planning pays off most, and they come with a fixed schedule. The zoo's 2026 announcement lists free admission on Mondays, November 23 and 30 and December 7 and 14. Admission is free, but a ticket is required for every guest, infants included. Free tickets are released one week in advance at 11 a.m. CT. Counting back a week from each free night gives these release times:
- Monday, November 16, 11 a.m. for the November 23 free night
- Monday, November 23, 11 a.m. for November 30
- Monday, November 30, 11 a.m. for December 7
- Monday, December 7, 11 a.m. for December 14
The free nights also mean a household can use the same Monday twice, reserving next week's tickets at 11 a.m. and walking over that evening on tickets reserved the week before.
The free run ends before the busiest stretch of the season. Mondays December 21 and 28 are excluded from free admission. Those are the Mondays of Christmas week and New Year's week. Regular hours and ticketed attractions still apply on free nights, and food and drink are for sale.
The weekly rhythm has gaps, too. ZooLights is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and on Tuesdays December 1, 8 and 15. The press release says Tuesdays are closed except December 22 and 29, so the two holiday-week Tuesdays are open. ZooLights is also open on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
The Nights Built for a Specific Crowd
The special events are where the "book it now" logic is strongest, because each one is a single date with its own ticket. In date order:
- Sensory-Friendly Night, Tuesday, November 24, 4:30 to 9 p.m. Moving lights are static or greatly slowed, and music is softened or silenced. Tickets are $7 per person, and guests are welcome to bring noise-reduction headphones.
- The Chris White Trio Tribute to A Charlie Brown Christmas, Sunday, December 6. The matinee in the Pepper Family Wildlife Center includes Santa, Snoopy, a hot chocolate and cookie bar, and entry to ZooLights. The kid-friendly evening show is at Café Brauer. New this year is an 18+ evening show with the same offerings for adults.
- Adults Night Out: Sugar and Spice, Thursday, December 10, 6:30 to 10 p.m. It's 21+ with a DJ, s'mores, animal chats, caricatures, and unlimited carousel and Ferris wheel rides. Tickets start at $20.
- New Year's Eve at ZooLights, Thursday, December 31, 4:30 to 9 p.m. An hourly countdown, built so families can be home before bedtime.
- New Year's ReZoolutions, Saturday, January 2, 2 to 4 p.m. Yoga, sound meditation, nonalcoholic drink samples for guests 21 and older, and access to ZooLights before it opens to the public that evening. Tickets are available starting November 9.
Once you're inside, the extras have their own price list. Most rides, including the Endangered Species Carousel, the Lionel Train Adventure and the holiday VR experience, take one $4.50 ticket per guest. The Ferris wheel and Gorilla Trek take two, or $9. The Light Lounge at Foreman Pavilion has interactive light toys for families and a lounge area with food and drink for adults. Ice carvers work on Friday and Saturday nights, strolling carolers come on Sundays through December 21, and Santa is at the zoo through December 23. Those schedules matter if you're choosing a fixed date for a specific reason.
Cannon Drive and Clark Street Keep the Same Calendar
Away from the zoo, Lincoln Park's December events also cluster on fixed dates, and most of them are a short walk from the paid lot on Cannon Drive, where the zoo directs ZooLights drivers.
- Saturday, November 28: Sustainable Makers' Market, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, 2430 N. Cannon Drive, hosts local makers who sell goods made from natural, recycled or upcycled materials. Entry is $10 to $17 and includes museum admission. It falls on Small Business Saturday, a few hundred yards from the zoo.
- Thursday and Friday, December 3 and 4: Christmas at DePaul. Performances are at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Lincoln Park, per DePaul University.
- Sunday, December 6: Clark Street Cookie Crawl, 1 to 3:30 p.m. On Clark between Fullerton and Diversey, the Lincoln Park Chamber of Commerce is inviting neighbors to visit participating businesses for holiday cookies, with carolers, hot chocolate and photos with Santa along the way. Holiday pajamas or sweaters are encouraged. The zoo's Charlie Brown tribute is the same day, so a household could do cookies on Clark in the afternoon and jazz at Café Brauer that evening.
- Wednesday, December 9: Chamber Music Immersive Holiday Special. The Chicago History Museum lists this Magellan Arts partner event, which pairs Brahms's Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor with Tchaikovsky's Souvenir de Florence. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the concert starts at 6:30.
- Saturday, December 12: Tiny Cloche Making, 1 to 2 p.m. A one-hour workshop at the Nature Museum where you build a small display from natural materials. It costs $85 to $95.
Laid out together, the first two weeks of December are the densest stretch. Between December 3 and 14, the neighborhood has the DePaul concerts, the Cookie Crawl and the Charlie Brown tribute on the same Sunday, the History Museum concert, the 21+ zoo night, the cloche workshop, and the last two free ZooLights Mondays. Christmas week has no free Monday, and ZooLights is closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
For a Lincoln Park household, the practical version of all this is short. Book fixed-date ZooLights nights early in the season, when they cost $7 to $12. Set reminders for the four Monday-morning releases. Keep $20 Flexible tickets for the nights that depend on the weather. And put the December 6 double bill and the November 28 market on the calendar now, since neither repeats.
